EXPERIENCE RARE PRODUCTS FROM ORKNEY

PARTNERING WITH THE BEST MAKERS AND PRODUCERS

The relative rarity and distinct attributes of Orkney Boreray sheep means we’re especially selective about how wool, horn and skins are used. This means partnering with handpicked producers that we know understand the significance of this breed, its history and the special characteristics of what the sheep provide.

The fleece retains the primitive qualities of the first sheep introduced into Britain 6000 years ago by Neolithic farmers, still being naturally shed by the sheep each year and giving the option of being removed from the sheep by the ancient art of rooing. It is double-coated with a strong, hairy outercoat and an incredibly fine and soft undercoat. This creates both challenges and opportunities in processing and using it.

As part of the sustainability ethos of the Orkney Boreray Community we seek to use as much as possible from the sheep. The range of products includes various handcrafted horn products, bark-tanned sheepskins and bark-tanned leather.

We believe in forging strong relationships with our produce partners — reinforcing standards, guaranteeing provenance and ensuring that the Orkney Boreray name and logo are a mark of the utmost quality.
